Ten Commandments for Horses

These are things people both new to horses and those that have had them for a while need to remember.

1. My life is likely to last 20 or more years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you take me home.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long. Don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I have only you.

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when it is speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.

7. Remember before you hit me that I am powerful enough to hurt you, but choose not to.

8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I have a problem that you are not yet aware of.

9. Take care of me when I am old. You too will be old one day.

10. Go with me on the last journey. Never say "I can't bear to watch or let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there.

CRIBBING: CAN YOU STOP IT?

Many horses kept in unnatural environments and subjected to the stress of performance careers resort to repetitive behaviors (called stereotypies) such as cribbing, weaving, or stall walking. The cribbing horse grabs a surface with his top incisors, arches his neck, opens his throat, and swallows air with a grunting sound and a backward pull of the head. This activity wears down the top incisors and develops unsightly muscles under the neck that can interfere with proper neck flexion when ridden. Serious cribbers might lose weight because they become so addicted to their habit they'd rather crib than eat. Once the habit starts, many horses keep cribbing even when turned out to pasture. 1993 Dodge One Ton Dually Diesel Truck - $7995

This is my pride an joy, but I have found a new hauler for my trailer that is much more comfy. Never thought I would find something that would haul like this truck, but did. So now my baby is for sale.

This 1993 Dodge 1 ton dually diesel is set up for hauling. It will haul most anything. Guys at the feed store would come off the dock to see what it was. You can put 2 tons of feed and the silly thing won't even go down. Over load springs are awesome! It has 411 gears on the rear. Top speed empty is about 70, but makes it great traveling the mountains with four horses in the Sundowner. It has a gooseneck ball with rings. The ball folds down. It has a bumper pull ball as well as a tractor attachment (for lack of better term). We have used it to haul fertilizer from the feed store. It's a 5 speed manual. Jump seats in the crew cab. AM/FM CD player. Great tires.

We bought the truck in 2000 with 138850 miles. We replaced the engine shortly after buying the truck (within a year) and about a year later had to rebuild the rear end and transmission. It now has 183,650 miles on it. We keep synthetic oil in the motor and change it regularly.

This truck is ready to start pulling your horses to your next playday, trail ride or other event. Email us for more details. We are negotiable on the price, but this is a fair price for the work this truck will do for you!

Goings on at our house...

I know I have been out of touch a bit. Had a billion things going on and no time to write. But today gotta get stuff off my chest. :) Hopefully you have seen the countdown. We are down to 2 weeks and it can't be soon enough. For both parties. Others might have followed my Twittering (http://twitter.com/sierraranch) and know about what has been happening.

In the mean time things have gone from bad to worse to normal again. Last Sat. (3/21) we got a call that Rick's dad was in the hospital and not doing well. We needed to be in Agleton TX before the youngest brother got on the plane to go back to NC. The middle brother was flying in later on Sun. So we made a 9 hour driving trip and got to the hospital about 2AM and visited a second. We couldn't find his house even with the GPS. How many cattle paths can be named Bastrop Drive??? Stayed 4 hours in a hotel, got up and visited with Dick and others at the hospital. We followed a neighbor to his house and went back to wait.

Greg got in about 11PM Sun. They stayed at a hotel. Doctors would not really give us a good time frame for the end. The friends had arranged for Dick to come home on Monday since nothing could really be done. The boys got things worked out on Monday and their dad came home. Several step kids and many friends came by the house to see him. We stayed there with him and the nurse. One set of step kids slept in the downstairs.

Tuesday Dick got quieter and we thought this might be the day, but he held on through another great gathering and the morning. Greg's daughter got in and said her goodbyes and shortly later the nurse came out and let us know he passed. Dick was diagnosed with lung cancer. As they were looking they found cancer in his bones, spine, lythm system, and who knows where else. He just wanted to die at home and did. He didn't want to linger and didn't. The nurses made sure he was comfortable.

Greg was listed at the executor, but wanted to pass this on to Rick since we live closer, so know we get to oversee the disspurment of the estate. Any one want a nice house on the Bastrop Bayou? We have a court date in about a month.

So far we have inherited a no tailed cat named Bob. Allyson is taming him. I think he may have been an inside cat at one time, but he was an outside cat at Dick's. He is at least nuetered. And he is not a manx. It feels like something cut his tail off. I even snuck Bob into a hotel room to get him home.

We will also be taking over Dick's gun show business. They boys split up the guns he had, but we currently have all the parts, gun smithing tools, and other stuff. Rick is researching what to do with this. He might actually get to quit work sooner which we would all like. :) He can see this as a great side business to have with the horse operation.

We went through most of the stuff in the house and have a big job ahead of us, but we will take the challenge. That's what the oldest do. Middle children are so funny. :) We got things tied up pretty well and headed out on Thursday evening so that we could be home to get Allyson ready for the prom. Rick told the family that we need to focus on Allyson now that his dad is gone. Everyone agreed. We hope to bring her down with us when we go next.

The whole week that we were in TX the kids were being watch over by our version of a village. :) Allyson stayed part of the weekend with my Mom. Our neighbor that lives behind us and takes Ashley to work made sure that Allyson got ont he bus every morning before taking Ashley. I called each morning to wake Allyson and got to talk

to her all the way to the bus. :) She is so funny. Then after school mom made sure they had food. Mom even spent Sunday trying to teach the kids to clean house. (What Fun!) I don't know that it worked , but after a week of stepping into my shoes, my Mother has much more understanding of what I go through and what works. Now she even understand the count down. LOL!!!

Allyson had fun at the prom. She was taken out to eat at Olive Garden, petted fishes, danced to death, and then went to the after party. Ryan got to go to the after party some and they had fun. It went from rain to snow and by the time I went to pick her up from a friend's it was snowing buckets.

OMG it is SO NOT suppose to snow like this time of year! For freaking sake it's SPRING! We got at least four inches and will have the world's largest muddiest mess, but at least it's moisture. We needed it so bad. Just this all at once thing is a bit much. What is so funny is seeing the green grass sticking out of the snow. LOL!

Well, I better get to my ratkilling. I am 1100+ emails behind in one email account and 12,000+ behind in another. All my IM stuff is falling behind and I really need to get all the bills and estate stuff up to date. But my desk is a total mess. LOL!

And my cat is mad she doesn't have place to sit. :P And just 14 more days until Ashley's driver's test. We can't wait. OK, enough rambling. Must go do something. Not sure what, but something! Now it makes sense that the newsletter for the ranch has not gone out and the million other things I need to do.

Asley will turn 18 on April 11th, but Monday she will take the test. After this we feel we have done what we can. You don't want to know waht the next step is with her. :)

Rick has told me that June 1 he will be full time at the ranch. So this count down is to remind me what are the most important things to be working on.

Strategies to Prevent and Respond to Barn Fires

If you have read our newsletters before you know we are about how to protect you and your horses from disaster. We have lived through at least one. You can still see our barn pictures from last summer. And we feel everyone is better to at least think about these different possibilities before these things happen. Happy reading!

At the 2008 American Association of Equine Practitioners convention, held Dec. 6-10 in San Diego, Calif., Rebecca Gimenez, PhD, noted that barn fires are the No. 1 local emergency that affects everyone from horse owners to veterinarians, and property owners to the horses themselves. Barn fires kill more horses annually than any other type of nonmedical emergency. Of 11,500 agricultural storage facility fires per year, 88% are barns or stables with animals, resulting in about $250 million in property losses annually. In 87 horse-barn fire incidents reported in 2006 and 2007, 461 horses died and an unknown number were injured. Read More...

MRSA More Common in Horse People

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacterial infections have become hot news lately, especially among horse people. This topic likely won't die down soon because recent research shows that MRSA is up to 10 times more common in equine veterinarians than in the general population--and that it can spread from horses to humans. "MRSA appears to be an occupational risk factor for large animal veterinarians," noted Maureen Anderson, DVM, DVSc, postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathobiology of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Managing Horses in Icy Conditions

Ice is an unavoidable part of winter in many parts of the world, but there are ways to minimize slipping incidents around the barn. Heather Sherratt knows something about keeping horses in icy conditions. Her farm, Elphin Mountain Connemaras, near Ottawa, Canada, was hit hard by the 1998 ice storm that caused weeks-long power outages and several deaths in Canada and parts of the northeastern United States. "My ponies are barefoot, and that helps," she said. If going barefoot over the winter isn't an option, farrier Pat Sweeney of Mandan, N.D., recommends applying borium to shoes to increase their grip. Sweeney also said that snowball pads and rubberized rim pads will help keep snow from packing into the foot. Read More...

Blaze’s Tribute Equine Rescue, Inc. located in Jones, Oklahoma, is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that strives to improve the lives of neglected, starved, and abused horses. We provide equine rescue regardless of age or disability. We promote and teach horse care and humane, natural methods of training horses.

RESCUES:

Blaze’s Equine Rescue is currently caring for 59 horses. We were able to adopt out 8 horses in January. We still need to place many more into loving forever homes. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting a rescued horse, please contact Natalee at any of the contact numbers above.

Blaze’s Equine Rescue has started off the year very busy with animal cruelty cases. On Sunday, January 25, 2009, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office contacted us regarding 2 horses, extremely emaciated and 1 was down and unable to get up. We immediately contacted our Veterinarian requesting her assistance. We arrived at the location at 3:30 pm and immediately started trying to save the down mare. We tried to get the mare up and tried to save her for a little more than 4 hours in the freezing weather. She was just too weak and unable to stand. It was apparent that this poor girl, named JoJo, was not going to survive. We made the painful decision to let her go and end her suffering. JoJo was extremely emaciated and her companion Willow was in equally bad condition.

We brought Willow home and started her rehabilitation process, but 2 days later Willow went down. Once again we started trying to save Willow, even placed her into a sling and lifted her to her feet, but she was unable to stand. She just couldn’t place her feet underneath her. She was showing neurological signs. Unfortunately, Willow did not make it. We began to panic and worried for the other horses in the barn with Willow and prayed that it was not something that was contagious. We sent Willow to OSU for a necropsy to confirm that our horses were safe. The necropsy found screws, bark, and porcelain type material in Willow’s stomach and colon. These poor girls were eating anything that they could find trying to survive. The former owner of these horses spent 10 days in County Jail before being baled out. It is just so sad what these two girls had to go through. It was heartbreaking that we were not able to save them.

IN LOVING MEMORY SWEET JOJO AND WILLOW!

On Wednesday, February 4, 2009, we were contacted by the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division to pick up 7 horses. Most of these horses are emaciated, infested with parasites, lice and in need of dental work and feet trimming. Please consider making a donation towards their rehabilitation. In 2009, we have picked up a total of 9 horses from the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division alone and this is only February.

This is Pac-Man, a 6yr old, Paint, Stud. He is extremely emaciated and weighing in at 656 pounds. This poor boy should weigh at least 1000 pounds. Such a sweetheart! Please consider making a donation towards Pac-Man’s rehabilitation.

This is Molly, a 22 year old Thoroughbred, Mare. Molly is very thin, has a tattoo, so we know she is a former race horse. Please consider making a donation towards Molly’s rehabilitation.

This is Porter, a 15 year old gelding. He is emaciated weighing in at 862 pounds. He is such a sweet boy. Please consider making a donation towards Porter’s rehabilitation.

This is Paisley, a 6 year old mare. She is emaciated weighing in at 706 pounds. She is a sweet girl. Please consider making a donation towards Paisley’s Rehabilitation.

She was a neglect case when she arrived. She is a beautiful horse and needs that loving, forever home to call her own. Welcome!

Welcome to the tenth edition of the Sierra Ranch News! I apologize for the hiatus in our newsletter. Life seems to get in the way of us getting everything done that we want to do. Things have kinda calmed down around here and we hope to get back on a regular schedule.

Tell us what you where you plan on riding this Spring. As you can see from the calendar there are many options on places to ride and things to do. Let us know what information you would like to learn tips on horse keeping, latest horses for sale and any other info you find interesting. Horses Appear In the Inaugural Celebrations

The President's Inaugural Parade has a long tradition of including horses in the festivities, and this year was no different. With more than 200 horses representing 10 teams from throughout the United States, riders helped make this historic celebration memorable. May 2-3 Trail Work Weekend Arrowhead State Park, Lake Eufaula, OK. The Bad Girls Trail Riding Club (BGTRC) and the Oklahoma Equestrian Trail Riders Association (OETRA) have teamed up to have a work weekend at Arrowhead State Park to clean the trails that were destroyed and nearly lost due to the ice storm Pittsburg County had in 2007. We will be camping at the Equestrian Camp and a covered dish dinner will be served Saturday night. Everyone bringing a covered dish will receive a ticket for a door prize to be given away Saturday night. Please plan on attending and helping these two great clubs out in cleaning the trails that all of us will use. Leasing versus Buying

Leasing is a great option to learn more about the horse and see if you match. It is different than a lesson horse in that you are the only person riding the horse. It’s a great way to see if you really want to own the horse without taking that step of actually buying the horse.

We know many horse people that only use their horses in the spring and fall, then they are left to fend for themselves in summer and winter. Wouldn't it be better for both human and equine if the horse was leased rather than owned? Then the horse gets the same quality of care all year long as with every horse at Sierra Ranch.

The rider gets a saddle that fits both the rider and the horse. Lessons, transportation to local riding events, as well as attending trail rides with us are also included in the cost of a lease. If your ability increases then you can move to a more challenging horse for the same cost. You are still the only one to ride this horse, so that you can develop a great relationship with them.

Here at Sierra Ranch we prepare folks to begin horse ownership. We know many folks have never owned a horse, let alone an ex racing TB. These wonderful horses require some special care, just as they require a particular rider. We strive not only to make good matches, but responsible owners. We want each rider to know the limitations and expectations of the horse they are riding. And how to care for them if they choose to purchase one.

And is you happen to match perfectly with one of our horses and over time develop that wonderful bod then ownership is a possibility. But you have gotten to know if horse ownership is something you want and can fit into your life without the expense of buying a horse and then the cost of selling if things change.

The greater price of financial security

Money makes us do crazy things we never thought we would do. A great example of this is staying at a job you dislike or working outside the home when your heart is at home with your family. While money does provide opportunities and liberation from certain stresses in life, unhappiness has a greater price. Let money enrich an already abundant life, not define or run it. Can you re-prioritize your life in a way that you are achieving both financial goals and also fulfilling your dreams? Live the kind of life that excites you to get out of bed in the morning, one of color and joy. If money comes, great. If not, rest assured, knowing that your life is not defined by what you make but what you already have. The best things in life are free!

This is another SparkPeople.com Healthy Reflection. And a picture that Rick took of me this morning with my next great horse, Third Time. Rick had tried to feed him a carrot and Third Time would not take it from Rick. I had to go into the pasture, break it into pieces, and then he would eat them. Third Time is still learning to eat treats. He loves me and lets me give him kisses. Not sure how it will get on his tall butt, but he does at least stand still and let me on. Nothing like having to have a step, lower the stirrup, AND be boosted to get on your horse. Sure make you not wanna come off though. LOL!

Back to the message above... I would greatly ike to live to meet these goals. I have been trying to get to a point that we could have Rick come home and work the Ranch. It's really difficult to both be working demanding jobs and trying to get the ranch to support itself and one of us. Rick really hates his day job and would be so much easier to be around it he had nothing but the horses to work with. My real job supplies us not only with income, but awesome benefits like insurance. So it will be a while till I get to come home also.

But this is why I have been working so hard to find ways to earn some extra money on the side. I want so bad to make us a great life. To get a happy husband back. To live, love and laugh with those around us. I know it takes hard work and I have been putting some in. Just looking for a bit more of the gravy and loving what I have already.

Warning: Do Not Read Unless You're Over 40!

Okay, now remember, I said this blog is for people

Over 40 ONLY.

If you're younger than 40, and you get offended by anything I say, tough tutus, you weren't invited to this party anyway! ;-)

Now then... I want to tell you what happened to me the other day... I bought an exercise dvd because I'm tired of being tired. I want to get into shape, I want to fit into my clothes, and I want energy - LOTS of it!

So I put on my old sweats, put on the dvd, and here was this barely 20 something girl in the shape of a toothpick, grinning menacingly (I swear!) at the camera like she was going to take a bite out it. Or me.

"Don't worry," she says. "We're going to start out sloooowwww."

Grin grin grin.

Barely five minutes into her jumping/gyrating/vibrating routine, I collapsed on the couch, completely confused, frustrated and ANNOYED.

Maybe, just maybe I could have kept up with her for awhile if something she did made SENSE. But just when I was able to copy one of her moves, she was on to the next one like a frenzied rabid rabbit.

"Okay," she grins, "Put your right arm up and step with your left foot and put your left arm out and hop with your right leg while bending at the waist and touch your forehead to the floor and snap back up and whirl your arms while moving your legs out and in and then turn left and slide down and roll and back up and bend and touch your head to your butt and..."

Holy @#$%&^*! Who exercises like this???

Not me. I'm over 40. I want to get in shape.

I want to feel good, look good, and have lots of energy.

I don't need a barely 20's chicklet telling me, someone twice her age, how to get in shape.

Because frankly, she doesn't have a clue.

What she teaches might be fine for people her age.

To have a horse in your life... (Tissue ALERT!)

This really explains it all. I recieved it on another list and thought maybe this will explain to my friends without horses in their lives how we at Sierra Ranch feel. I found that it can be a real tear jerker, so that is the need for the tissue alert. Wished I knew who wrote this. I know many of my horse friends could have. It is so very true.

TO HAVE A HORSE IN YOUR LIFE

To have a horse in your life is a gift. In the matter of a few short years, a horse can teach a young girl courage, if she chooses to grab mane and hang on for dear life. Even the smallest of ponies is mightier than the tallest of girls. To conquer the fear of falling off, having one's toes crushed, or being publicly humiliated at a horse show is an admirable feat for any child. For that, we can be grateful.

Horses teach us responsibility. Unlike a bicycle or a computer, a horse needs regular care and most of it requires that you get dirty and smelly and up off the couch. Choosing to leave your cozy kitchen to break the crust of ice off the water buckets is to choose responsibility. When our horses dip their noses and drink heartily; we know we've made the right choice.

Learning to care for a horse is both an art and a science. Some are easy keepers, requiring little more than regular turn-out, a flake of hay, and a trough of
clean water. Others will test you - you'll struggle to keep them from being too fat or too thin. You'll have their feet shod regularly only to find shoes gone missing. Some are so accident-prone you'll swear they're intentionally finding new ways to injure themselves.

If you weren't raised with horses, you can't know that they have unique personalities. You'd expect this from dogs (and even cats), but horses? Indeed, there are clever horses, grumpy horses, and even horses with a sense of humor. Those prone to humor will test you by finding new ways to escape from the barn when you least expect it.

Horses can be timid or brave, lazy or athletic, obstinate or willing. You will hit it off with some horses and others will elude you altogether. There are as many "types" of horses as there are people - which makes the whole partnership thing all the more interesting.

If you've never ridden a horse, you probably assume it's a simple thing you can learn in a weekend. You can, in fact, learn the basics on a Sunday, but
to truly ride well takes a lifetime. Working with a living being is far more complex than turning a key in the ignition and putting the car or tractor in "drive."

In addition to listening to your instructor, your horse will have a few things to say to you as well. On a good day, he'll be happy to go along with the program and tolerate your mistakes; on a bad day, you'll swear he's trying to kill you. Perhaps he's naughty or perhaps he's fed up with how slowly you're learning his language. Regardless, the horse will have an opinion. He may choose to challenge you (which can ultimately make you a better rider) or he may carefully carry you over fences - if it suits him. It all depends on the partnership - and partnership is what it's all about.

If you face your fears, swallow your pride, and are willing to work at it, you'll learn lessons in courage, commitment, and compassion in addition to basic survival skills. You'll discover just how hard you're willing to work toward a goal, how little you know, and how much you have to learn.

And, while some people think the horse "does all the work", you'll be challenged physically as well as mentally. Your horse may humble you completely. Or, you may find that sitting on his back is the closest you'll get to heaven.

You can choose to intimidate your horse, but do you really want to? The results may come more quickly, but will your work ever be as graceful as that gained through trust? The best partners choose to listen, as well as to tell. When it works, we experience a sweet sense of accomplishment brought about by smarts, hard work, and mutual understanding between horse and rider. These are the days when you know with absolute certainty that your horse is enjoying his work.

If we make it to adulthood with horses still in our lives, most of us have to squeeze riding into our over saturated schedules; balancing our need for things equine with those of our households and employers. There is never enough time to ride, or to ride as well as we'd like. Hours in the barn are stolen pleasures.

If it is in your blood to love horses, you share your life with them. Our horses know our secrets; we braid our tears into their manes and whisper our hopes into their ears. A barn is a sanctuary in an unsettled world, a sheltered place where life's true priorities are clear: a warm place to sleep, someone who loves us, and the luxury of regular meals. Some of us need these reminders.

When you step back, it's not just about horses - it's about love, life, and learning. On any given day, a friend is celebrating the birth of a foal, a blue ribbon, or recovery from an illness. That same day, there is also loss: a broken limb, a case of colic, a decision to sustain a life or end it gently. As horse people, we share the accelerated life cycle of horses: the hurried rush of life, love, loss, and death that caring for these animals brings us. When our partners pass, it is more than a moment of sorrow.

We mark our loss with words of gratitude for the ways our lives have been blessed. Our memories are of joy, awe, and wonder. Absolute union. We honor our horses for their brave hearts, courage, and willingness to give.

To those outside our circle, it must seem strange. To see us in our muddy boots, who would guess such poetry lives in our hearts? We celebrate our companions with praise worthy of heroes. Indeed, horses have the hearts of warriors and often carry us into and out of fields of battle.

Listen to stories of that once-in-a-lifetime horse; of journeys made and challenges met. The best of horses rise to the challenges we set before them, asking little in return.

Those who know them understand how fully a horse can hold a human heart. Together, we share the pain of sudden loss and the lingering taste of long-term illness. We shoulder the burden of deciding when or whether to end the life of a true companion.

In the end, we're not certain if God entrusts us to our horses--or our horses to us. Does it matter? We're grateful God loaned us the horse in the first place.

A Letter to Our Horses...

Dear Horses,

I love you very much, and I truly cherish your presence in my life. I would never wish to criticize you in any way. However, there are a few trivial details regarding our relationship that I think might bear your consideration.

First of all, I am already aware that horses can run faster than I can. I do not need you to demonstrate that fact each time I come to get you in the pasture. Please remember that I work long and hard to earn the money to keep you in the style to which you have become accustomed. In return, I think you should at least pretend to be glad to see me, even when I'm carrying a bridle instead of a bucket of oats.

It should be fairly obvious to you that I am a human being who walks on only two legs. I do not resemble a scratching post. Do not think that, when you rub your head against me with 1,000 pounds of force behind it, I believe that it wasn't your intention to send me flying. I am also aware that stomping on my toes while you are pushing me around is nothing but adding injury to insult.

I understand I cannot expect you to cover your nose when you sneeze, but it would be appreciated if you did not inhale large amounts of dirt and manure prior to aiming your sneezes at my face and shirt. Also, if you have recently filled your mouth with water you do not intend to drink, please let it all dribble from your mouth BEFORE you put your head on my shoulder. In addition, while I know you despise your deworming medication, my intentions in giving it to you are good, and I really do not think I should be rewarded by having you spit half of it back out onto my shirt.

Sometimes, I get the feeling that you are confused about the appropriate roles you should play in various situations. One small bit of advice: Your stone-wall imitation should be used when I am mounting and your speed-walker imitation when I suggest that we proceed on our way, not vice versa. Please also understand that jumping is meant to be a mutual endeavor. By "mutual", I mean that we are supposed to go over the jump together. You were purchased to be a mount, not a catapult.

I know the world is a scary place when your eyes are on the sides of your head, but I did spend a significant amount of money to buy you, and I have every intention of protecting that investment. Therefore, please consider the following when you are choosing the appropriate behavior for a particular situation:

When I put your halter on you, attach one end of a lead rope to the halter, and tie the other end of the lead rope to a post or rail or whatever, I am indicating a desire for you to remain in that locale. I would also like the halter, lead rope, post, etc., to remain intact. While I admit that things like sudden loud noises can be startling, I do not consider them to be acceptable excuses for repeatedly snapping expensive new lead ropes (or halters or posts) so that you can run madly around the barn area creating havoc in your wake. Such behavior is not conducive to achieving that important goal that I know we both share --- decreasing the number of times the veterinarian comes out to visit you.
By the same token, the barn aisle was not designed for the running of the Kentucky Derby and is not meant to serve as a racetrack. Dragging me down the aisle in leaps and bounds is not how "leading" is supposed to work, even if someone happens to drop a saddle on the floor as we're passing. Pulling loose and running off is also discouraged (although I admit it does allow you to run faster).
I assure you that blowing pieces of paper do not eat horses. While I realize you are very athletic, I do not need a demonstration of your ability to jump 25 feet sideways from a standing start while swapping ends in midair, nor am I interested in your ability to emulate both a racehorse and a bucking bronco while escaping said piece of paper. Also, if the paper were truly a danger, it would be the height of unkindness to dump me on the ground in front of it as a sacrificial offering to expedite your escape.
When I ask you to cross a small stream, you may safely assume that said stream does not contain crocodiles, sharks, or piranhas, nor will it be likely to drown you. (I have actually seen horses swimming, so I know it can be done. ) I expect you to be prepared to comply with the occasional request to wade across some small body of water. Since I would like to be dry when we reach the other side of the stream, deciding to roll when we're halfway across is not encouraged behavior.
I give you my solemn oath that the trailer is nothing but an alternate means of transportation for distances too long for walking. It is not a lion's den or a dragon's maw, nor will it magically transform into such. It is made for horses, and I promise you that you will indeed fit into your assigned space. Please also bear in mind that I generally operate on a schedule, and wherever we're going, I would really like to get there today.

For the last time, I do not intend to abandon you to a barren, friendless existence. If I put you in a turn-out pen, I promise that no predators will eat you, and I will come back in due time to return you to your stall. It is not necessary to run in circles, whinny pathetically, threaten to jump the fence, or paw at the gate. Neither your stall mates nor I will have left the premises. The other horses standing peacefully in adjacent pens amply demonstrate that it is possible to enjoy being turned out for exercise.

In order to reassure you, my dear horse, I have posted the following message on your stall door:

"Notice to People Who Complain About My Horse"

1. I like my horse a lot better than I like people who complain a bout him/her.

2. To you, he's an animal; to me, he's a big, hairy, four-legged child --- and you know what they say about coming between a mother and her children.

3. This stall is his castle, and you are expected to treat him as the king/queen he/she thinks he/she is.

4. If you don't want him to steal your carrots, don't walk by him with the carrots sticking out of your pockets.

5. Horses are better than husbands or kids. They eat grass, don't smoke or drink, don't expect an allowance, don't voluntarily get their body parts pierced, don't hog the remote, don't waste the whole weekend watching football with their friends, don't talk back to you, don't compare you unfavorably with their friends' owners, don't keep you awake with their snoring --- and no horse ever left the toilet seat up after going to the bathroom.

Finally, in closing, my strong and gentle companion, I would like to point out that, whatever might happen between horses and their people, we humans will always love you. In fact, our bonds with you help create new bonds among ourselves, even with total strangers. Wherever there are horses, there will be "horse people," and for the blessings you bestow upon us, we thank you.

Memory can be used for good or for evil. If you use your past as a source of learning, it's worth remembering. If, however, all you do is mull over your mistakes and punish yourself for your failures, it's a waste of time. Rehashing failure can paralyze you in mortal fear of making another mistake, which, of course, just makes the feeling worse and practically guarantees future letdowns. The key to making meaningful changes is to pay more attention to the future than to the past. Have you ever noticed that the best athletes also have the shortest and most selective memories? Instead of dwelling on a missed shot or a flawed dive, they concentrate on making corrections and getting the next one right. It's as if the failed attempt never happened. It's forgotten and they don't fear trying again. If you mess up, even in an epic, life-altering way, work hard to leave it behind and concentrate on the possibilities yet to come. Tomorrow is much brighter when it's not smeared with a fixation on yesterday.

Can we say a goo AMEN to this wonderful SparkPeople.com Healthy Reflection? I have several of these saved that I need to blog on. Just haven't had the time. And why do I NOW have the time. As the wonderful webcam (yeah, I finally figured it out) tells us I am not at home. Both good and bad about that.

Me and the PINK laptop are road tripping to our local library. I LOVE free WIFI! LOL!! I even love more the nice peace and quiet that I am geting. OK so I do have on head phones downloading my favorite rock music, but I have no OTHER disstractions. I had to get away fom the zoo for teo reasons. ONE: the danged wind was freaking with our phone lines. I need to put a danged windmill on my danged hill. :P TWO: Lack of internet connection was getting me testy with the 17yo. I figured distance and Rick correcting her would help. We will see upon my return. At the very least I can't complain about the lack of internet connection at the library. Just can't get EVERYWHERE I wanna go, but heh, I'm suppose to be working. LOL!

So here I sit in sweats. Actually sweats that say WORK SUCKS... I'm going to Remington Park. LOL! Yeah, that always gets looks. :P I have been through some of the bills. Still need to balance the check books. Gotta start putting stuff into the ranch spreadsheet. ACK! And have no excuse about being interupted or a danged cat sitting on my stuff. :) Alsmost even caught up on emails. Still have a few to go through.

Got to visit my new doctor yesterday. Then learned that I need to take Allyson to visit her soon also. I really like my new doc. She is a horse person and didn't even question my laudry list of crap horses have done to me. LOL! She loved how throurough I was with the info I gave her. We didn't change any of my meds. She even agreed that the Cymbalta was a god thing with step kids. She understood having them also. Gotta love this new doctor. :)

Then I thought I was going to torture the kids and I think they ended up torturing me worse. I took them to the eye doctor. I really think I need to take duct tape with me when I take them in public. That's the only way to keep thier mouths shut. Maybe I just need to take one at a time. They just about wore me and the eye doctor out. Dr. Judy thinks Ashley is brain damaged. (No big suprise there!) Her eyes don't focus right on the horizon or the up and down orentation. That's why she tilts her head to one side when she concentrates. It actually could have been caused from a horse injury when she was little. Dr. Judy wants to do more testing, unfortunately Ashley is not covered by our insurance. I was just wanting to make sure that she wouldn't wreck the car when she started driving. We will probably get her some reading glasses and let her fix herself when she gets insurance.

Allyson's eyes were interesting. She is kinda cross-eyed and has problems on the vertical (opposite from Ashley's problem). Both girls have musclural issues with their eyes. Allyson has actually had surgery as a baby to correct hers and Dr. Judy was very impressed. Cheryl had told Allyson that she would be blind by 16 to 18. Dr. Judy said she was wrong. Her eyes are in great health. Just the left one over developed and the right one is way weak. Unfortunately, she seems to have been having migranes that we get to visit the other Dr. about. The migranes are causing her to lose sight in the strong eye for short periods of time. We will get the physical side checked out to make sure it's nothing else and then go back to the eye doc to finish with treatment.

And during the whole ENTIRE time we were in the eye doc's office the kids would not quit talking. AARRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! THey almost got on Dr. Judy's nerve until she finally realized we were doing the best we could. I just never know their eys could be so screwed up. And to top it off Dr. Judy would like to see Rain. It's bad when your family has such wierd eye problems that the doc wants to see the 6 month old to make sure there aren't any problems with her. That was an interesting call. :) I didn't eve know that they could do eye exams on that little of kids, but know that it's a good idea.

Well, guess I best get back to the rat killing. Gotta go check email. Get it knocked out. Man I hate the freaking wind. Hope it gets better before 5:30PM when the library closes. :P Hope you and yours have a wonderful weekend. I know I am, but just until I have to go back home. Why does even paying bills seem nicer in the peace and quiet of the library? Awe, nice to be away from the ZOO!

Here is a break down of how the money is spent. Blaze's Equine Rescue purchases 2 ton's a week of 12% Horse Pellets which cost $317.50 a ton. We purchase 6 bags of Equine Senior a week at $90.60 and 5 bags of Envision at $174.75. That is a total of $900.35 a week on grain alone. We purchase 16 round bales of hay every 7 days at $860.00. Just to provide Hay and Grain to 56 horses for one week cost us $1,760.35. We are very under budget right now, to just maintain the bare necessities for our horses. We still have monthly Veterinarian Bills & Farrier Bills on top of those expenses. Blaze's Equine Rescue is desperately seeking your assistance. Please help us continue our rescue efforts. Al was a smart man. He knew that generous acts benefit everyone, including yourself. The small actions you take now, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can have profound effects that you may never know about. Sometimes, just living as a good example has the power to inspire. Not quite as well-known are the physical and mental benefits that being a positive force can have for you. When you help others, stress decreases and causes less physical harm. Work and athletic performance improve. A positive attitude appears. And the mind is eased as troubles are put in perspective. Doing for others can involve a small gesture (pick up trash, write a note of encouragement, offer to mow your neighbor's lawn) or an ambitious undertaking (volunteer at a neighborhood center, mentor a coworker, work with disadvantaged youth). Make a habit of thinking "What can I do today to make someone's life easier?"

OK, this is an other SparkPeople Healthy reflection, but I am taking this TOTALLY wrong today.

I am 1000+ emails behind and just now getting to Nov. 1, 2008 emails. I try to read the important ones everyday, but if something has slipped trough then I am sorry. I take what is said above to heart. Al may have been a smart dude, but I'm thinking he didn't have teenagers when he wrote this. I think I need to print this out in extra big print and give it to the teenagers. Somehow, some way, some where the kids today think we owe them something. I know part of this it that I am getting people's rejected kids and they all have their own special needs, but DANG!!! I do one nice thing for them and then they come back for more or anothe one saw I did something nice and they bombard me with requests. Somedays I just need to keep my grumps bear personna and keep the silly cirtters away from me. :P

I keep telling Rick that it he really wants me to get caught up on EVERYTHING then I need walls for my office. And a door with a lock. Now I will date myself. My home office is kinda open and I guess asking for walls is like the guy on WKRP putting tape on the floor and making people use his door. (Funny, I jsut thought of that!) But in our world I put on my headphones and crank them so I can't hear children and then they threaten to put me on utube. :P There are days that killing them and not letting them turn 18 would be really easy and justifiable, but alas they live.

Now if I can just get the silly girls to understand time management and that since they are home all day THEY need to cook dinner and not me. Oh, well. This to shall pass or that's what I am told. I am still waiting for that.

The car above is my new ride. I am offically a grandma with a 2005 Ford Crown Victoira. We got it for $1500. No, I didn't miss a 0. It does have 174,000 miles on it (now). And we did have to go to Lawton to pick it up, but it was a corporate car and has mostly higway miles. I have and will add considerable more highway miles. It gets about the same gas milage as a smaller SUV that I was looking at and has a HUMONOGOUS trunk. I'd say two teenagers would fit quite nicely inside the trunk. :P So Allyson has the Altima. Now for her to get her permit. The other two will be liscend first, but at least then they can get to work if they had work. :P

Well better get. Got tons of real work to do. Luckily I think we hired a secretary and maybe someday will get another engineer so I won't be so overwhelmed. But this too will pass. I get off the whole week of Thanksgiving. Hope to get caught up some. And maybe ride some. Have a great day! And don't forget to do something nice soe someone else. :)

My New PINK Laptop!!!

So this was not a planned purchase, but like replacing a PC is ever REALLY planned. :P Rick came home yesterday to the laptop that he uses for our horse business being as he puts it kachingaed. Yep, that a technical term for friged beyond repair. :)

So we went laptop shopping at our local laptop places. And who would have thought that for $80 less, Intel, and a webcam you could get a nice PINK laptop. :) Needless to say instead of him fighting the girls off of his computer I got the new PINK laptop. Cuz I am meaner than him and will not take a cute smile to release my computer. :P

So, I have been getting stuff loaded.

What took a whole weekend the first time I did this took two hours. DANG! The pink one has a 200 GIG hard drive and 3 meg of ram. Can we say I got SPEED? :) OK, so I am SSSOOOOOOO NOT a PINK person, but ya know ya gotta do something to save a buck or two now days. :P Dude at the store acted like these creatures were not moving very fast. It was a pretty good discount. I know three girls at our house that would love this. And aren't gonna get it.

Course I know one friend I ride with that will try to steal this from me the next time I see her. Pinky was the pink power ranger at Halloween. She has a pink saddle, and every other thing that a horse could use, and every item of clothing. Luckily she is not on Multiply, but I may have to tease her a bit. Heehehehehe!

And ya know it's not really that pink when it's open. :) And now I am off to finish paying bills and working on the ranch books. YAY RIGHT! :P I'm off to figure out this web cam thing. LOL!

I did upload the new ranch site. Kinda an incentive to get the stinking site finsihed. Maybe over Thanksgiving. More later. Just had to post pictures of the new toy. UUmmmm, tool. Yay, that's it tool. Heheheheheh!

We have great news... Well maybe not wonderful but at least news!

This is a picture of Ashley taken about August 2007. August 21, 2007 she decided that she jsut had to get married and pictures of that and the resulting pregnancy are on other places on this bog.

November 12, 2008 Ashely was divorced. The picture below is from the trial ride on November 1, 2008 at Praugue Lake. Dalia never got in front and didn't get any pictures of her smile, but Ashley is much happeir now.

The pink headed girl is one of Ashley's friends that has moved in with us. Both girls have contracts and are learning what living up to them means.

Ashley is not required to pay child support, since she doesn't have a stable job. She is beginning to figure out that she needs to get her GED and driver's liscense to get a stable job. And she is beginning to head in that direction. Liz is talking about reenrolling in high school. I don't think Ashley will do that, but you never know.

Ashley does have superivsed visitation until she is 21, has a driver's lisence and taken a child rearing class. Rick and I get to be the supervisors, although others can be in that role. Her mother and grandmother are not allowed to visit Rain unless at a DHS approved site. Those two people needed to be kept very far away. Justin was awarded sole custody of Rain in every effort to keep that element from her.

Over the last several weeks Ashley has shown that she does not want to be a full time mother. I think it would have been better if she had realized that 14 months ago, but some folks just have to live to realize what they want in life and what they don't. It's just a really hard lesson to learn and watch being taught.

Hoepfully the remaining lessons until Ashely is 18 (April 11, 2009) are not as hard.

Allsyon is doing better in school. She is learning that we were serious about needing to pass all her classes. She failed Algebra and is retaking it this trimester. In OK you have to pass it before youcan graduate from high school. Maybe having the two older girls around will help Allyson understand what she needs to do. :)

Well, better get back to work. Hope you have a wonderful week. We feel a large relief at our house. Not everyone celebrates a divorce, but sometimes it's a good thing.

Given that MOST americans are larger and heavier than americans 100 years ago (the cowboy days) what would you ride up mountains, crossing rivers, or brush popping?

What Are They Thinking?

Everyone seems to think shopping for a horse is like shopping for apparel, either go cheap (like Wal-Mart) where the clothes are inexpensive and made God knows where by God knows whom, or go to the mall store and pick designer (and pricey) clothes to show your ability to pay the high price.

Well reguardless of price a horse:

Needs to eat (what does a bag of feed cost at your local store?)
Needs shelter, and possibly a blanket or two.
Needs Veterinary care.
Needs dental care.
Needs hay (not cheap anywhere these days)
Needs Farrier care.
Needs a saddle that fits, and all the tack.
ETC

So when looking for a horse, most people are looking for one who can carry them, wherever they want to go and do whatever they want to do.

Heck the payment per month on a well kept horse would lease a Mercedes and you should get your money's worth, however I have encountered just the opposite with horseowners lately. The horse that they bought is just not matched to the human or to what the human wants to do, and the two UNIVERSAL responses to "Why did you buy this one?" are either "He was cheap" or "He was pretty".

In most cases it's "he was cheap" most horses today cost about the same as the saddle on their backs, not that a bargain is a bad thing, everyone wants to get a good deal, but first make sure the horse is something that will suit your body and riding style, THEN BARGAIN.

How many of us have boots in the closet that we never wear because they were on sale, then we figured out how uncomfortable the sale boots were and left them in the closet. The good news is that boots in a closet do not require daily care, but a horse does.

Two weeks ago I was on a ride where a rider was hand carried out on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance because her "bargain" horse did not have the muscle mass to carry her and her saddle and her saddlebags up a mountain. Less than 20 minutes later the ride stopped again because the pretty black and white paint argued at the wrong time and took a tumble with it's rider, hurting the horse and breaking the riders collarbone. Anyone who has ridden for awhile can remember some stories of this type.

My point here is simply DON'T BUY ON PRICE OR COLOR. Find a horse that suits your physical makeup and the type of riding you want to do, then find a temperament that works for you, and only then start looking at colors or bargaining on price.

Don't waste your energy on worrying

Too many of us worry about things that we cannot change. Although worrying gives you something to focus on, there are more productive ways to spend your time. Instead of worrying about the things you cannot control, remind yourself that worrying doesn't bring change. If it is a situation that you can control, then there is no reason to worry! Find a solution and spend your energy fulfilling it. If nothing else, just talk to someone about your concerns. Getting them out in the open tends to help put your mind at ease.

This is another SparkPeople's Healthy Reflections. I guess you should know by now why I read them everyday. Or at least try to. The 17 yo was worrying a lot the first week she was here. This week she just has been making our lives mirseable. You know it's bad when the 15 yo wants to kick her out. :P Just reinforces the Let Go Let God approach.

We have our first all day visitation today. I have no idea if Ashley is looking forward to it or not. She is pulling the not be at home much when her dad and I are home thing. She was home some yesterday, but according to her sister, so annoying noone could stand her. We will see how this goes. Rain is to be here from 9AM to 9PM. Should make for an interesting day. Justin is to come and go riding with Rick and others. Can you say FUN? NOT!

On a brighter note, we may take Rain to see my mom. Mom has not gotten to see Rain in person. And I have not seen my new little brother. Don't Panick. This is not something you will see on the news. :) My mom and stepdad adopted an Affenpinscher from a rescue place in Tulsa. (Yeah, we had to go look that one up too!) Dillon is very cute and tiny. Mom is adjusting to the new dog well. Jerrell is getting to know him bit by bit. Jerrell is out of town some and Dillon is a bit stand offish. Dillon came from a puppy mill in the KC area. She got him and then went new car shopping. So I have yet to see either her new Jeep or Dillon. I figure this should be a good time. And get Ashley away from the house while Justin is playing with the horses.

I found this site last night and have listened to one video. I am looking forward to listening to more. Rick listens to Zigler all the time. I just have never heard him speak. He is very thought provoking. Thought you all might be interested.

We are stating to get more interest in our ranch. Rick is hoping to be able to quit the real job soon and work only the ranch. We will be developing a list of things for the kids to work on until then. That should be interesting. We went to another ranch's open house. It was very well attended. We gave away a gift certificate for a lease on a horse. It should be interesting to see what kind of responce we get out of this. It has been hard to ramp up advertising with not knowing when Rick will be out of town. Maybe is Ashley does settle a bit she can help with lessons. Right now she seems to be on hyper active mode. Not sure where that is coming from, but she is being evaluated by some professional help. We will see.

I have had some kind of wierd cold/allergy thing. Yesterday afternoon talking became interesting. Guess that's why I have typed so much this morning. LOL! Funny thing is my typeing seems to come out with a stuffy head also. I figure I should be safe around Rain since I don't have a fever, but you never know.

Well, I best get. I have over 300 email to read. Still need to pay bills and get caught up on those things. In addition, to finishing the business plan, finishing the Sierra Ranch website, updating the Hooves website, making a contract for Ashley to live by while living in our house and a bizzlion other things. This is a SparkPeople.com Healthy Reflection. Man oh man, is this not the truth. And the No. 2 Kid is finding this out and will find more out as time goes on.

As Dr. Rayner mentions, sometimes you can't avoid a bit of hardship. The kid is wanting us to make her feel good. She told me she couldn't study or concentrate to study without feeling good about herself. Again that is where she and I are different. I would study just to avoid all that. But again I am a nerd. I admit it. Not everyone reads text books for fun. :) Mom actually forced me to read romance novels when I was in high school. I relented to King Arther literature, but reading for fun was beyond what I wanted to do.

And Allyson is taking all this in stride. She had some math homework the other day. It said to solve the equations. I told her she had done them all wrong and she insisted this was the way the teacher told her to do them. Found out yesterday I was right. DUH! I know math and do it for fun. :)

Well, I am tons of emails behind and playing the secretary job at work, so guess I better get back to it all. Hope you all have a wonderful week. More as it becomes available. (You know this is keeping me sane, right?)

Life... The Emotional Roller Coaster

I have been wanting to add somethings to the blog and other places, but have not had time to actually get anything done.

This is our reason we are being tortured. OK, not really, but isn't she cute. Yeah, I am partial.

As was expected, the mother of this wonderful child is getting divorced from her father. Her father filed and since the mother (Rick's No. 2 child) is not educated, underage, and without a driver's liscence and car, the father has custody. We allowed Ashley to move back into our house with a few rules. No contact with her mother. She needs to get her GED and driver's liscense. She needs to help around the house until she gets a job. We will see how long this lasts.

We have convinced her that she doesn't need a lawyer right now. The father hired the one we used to get custody of Ashley and Allyson. We all want what is right. We want Rain to be safe and right this second that is with her father not Ashley. Ashley was running to her mother's and that was not good.

We had our first court date and things went pretty well. I wish the kids could be civil, but I know that's a lot to ask for from 17 and 19 year olds. I don't like all the stupid high school he said she said crap. But then I didn't really even like that crap in HS. :P I was just old for my time. Pretty much knew my mind from a very young age. I know totally wierd. And so not today!

Alas, back to court. We agreed to Justin having temporay custody. Ashley gets visitation Wen. evening and one weekend day. Rick or I have to be present. Partially to keep them civil and partially to keep her from doing something stupid. We go back to court in about a month (11/12). We can arrange to have the final agreement then, but she is acting like she wants to drag this out. She just doesn't get it.

We went to the J-D Trailriding Camp Hooves for a Cure ride. We were looking for big foot, but figured he stayed in his cave due to the stinking rain. :) We had fun even if we only rode for a couple of hours. Rick and the kids slept in on Sunday and we came home without riding again. We are looking forward to returning over a longer weekend. We will see how that goes. :) Rick, the kids and Andrea had fun entertaining everyone with the karoake machine.

Ashley came back with the cold that Allyson had earlier in the week. So that made court not so fun. Ashley has not been helping tons with stuff around the house, but it's only been a week. Hopefully we can work on that, but it's impossible to yell at her when she is asleep. So, as with all things, this to will pass.

Oh, and to make things EVEN better. My secretary found a better job within the City and I have a temp again. One of my engineers is moving to transportation design. So as one of the remaining ones said it will now commence to rain about the time the other engineer's wife goes into labor. Ain't life grand. Oh, and I got the evil work blackberry and the silly thing even worked in Octiva. Life is ssssoooooo not fun right now.

And I have been trying to work on the Sierra Ranch website. And not getting anywhere... Oh well!

I wanna get on my horse and ride into the sunset and not return for a very long time. But I won't. I will continue to try to right the world that we live in and hopefully earn a few more jewels for my crown as my brother in law says. Someday soon I will post pictures of our trip to the hurricane. :)

Cool ride for help with rescue horses!

Check out the link to the National Rescue Ride Org in the article below. It looks pretty cool. Thing is you need to register by OCT. 1 and must do it online. They will not be taking registration at the rides. (That is interesting, but from a different way for me...) And the best part is there are 7 pages of organizations and rides all over the US. So there should be one near everyone!

As every horse person knows there is not enough money to help every horse. This is an awesome way to ride (or walk) and raise money to help support our rescue organizations in this time of great need. Even if you can't attend an event, find someone to sponser. Visit a rescue's website near you and donate online. Every little bit helps a horse that needs the help. And no, I am not a part of any of these rescue organizations. This is just a cause that we at Sierra Ranch belive very strongly about. We have adopted horses. We don't want to see any horse suffer and know we can't save them all. It take ALL of the horse people to do that.

Just something intersting I came across while reading email, which I am wwwwaaaayyy behind on again. :) Have a great Sat. I get to sit here and get caught up with evertything.

LET'S WALK OR RIDE

Blaze's Tribute Equine Rescue is hosting a Walk/Ride at Lake Carl Blackwell on Sunday, October 19, 2008 with the National Rescue Ride. Flyer is attached. How it works is, you register with NRR at www.NationalRescueRide.org, and pick our organization to ride with. The cost is $20.00 to ride, that money benefits National Rescue Ride, you will receive a T-Shirt and instructions of how to get sponsors. Sponsorship money goes to Blaze's Equine Rescue. Once you are registered, the rider/walker needs to get Sponsorship money in order to Benefit Blaze's Tribute Equine Rescue. Remember even $10. Of sponsorship money is more than we had, so every little bit helps. We plan to have merchandise available for sale, a continental breakfast and lunch provided for donations, and for a little fun on the trail, we will have a Poker Run.

You're only cutting your potential short. Sure you might feel relieved that a stressful task has passed, but an undeserving sense of relief doesn't compare to the gratification of knowing that you completed your own work. If something in your life is difficult, meet it head on and earn the satisfaction of earning a job well done–with honesty and integrity.

This is yet another SparkPeople.com Healthy Reflection. Somehow today it seemed rather fitting. There are things going on in my life that make me think of this. There really are no shortcuts.

I have not been able to find a trailer exactly like this on the internet. All the ones I found were stock on the butt side with no tack room in the back. And ones not quite this nice were going for this much. It's a sturdy trailer with lots of miles left to go.

Finding victory in the small stuff

Nothing is guaranteed in life, so make the most of each day and persevere. Remember that the small things in life build up to the bigger ones.

This is a SparkPeople.com Healthy Reflection that totally hit home with some things going on in our world recently. I know I haven't sent something like this in a while, but time has been short. I am just taking time to do this today. :P

This weekend we will be going to Rick's family reunion in (of all places) Mobile, AL. Yeah, during hurricane season on the danged beach. Luckily (or not) Ike decided to bypass Mobile so we will be on the road on Thurs. and return home on Sun. I have met his Dad and one brother, so this should be really interesting. Allyson is coming with. Not sure about Aaron. But the older two are busy with their lives.

We are actively working on making the ranch a working ranch. Rick so wants to quit his real job and only work with the horses. We are slowly getting to that point. This weekend I will take the lap top and work on the buisness plan, new Seirra Ranch web site, and the million of other things that I need to do to get this further down the road. Soon, we will need to LLC the operation. Occassionally on here you will see some things that might help with your ranch operations. Let me know what you think of them.

Rick teased me about the life coach post. :) He of course thinks my horse has lots more to teach me and I need to just spend more time with him. Man, I wished it really worked that way. Third Time is so funny. I have been trying to get him to warm us to us. Now when he sees me coming out to the pasture he comes running to me, since I have been using treats to get him to warm up. LOL! This past weekend he came and sould have put his head in the birdle I had for Maverick if I had just left it there long enough for him to figure it out. I have rode Third Time once. I need to ride him some more, but have this terrible fear of riding in the pasture and feel that since Mav doesn't give a flying flip if I am scared then it's better to ride him and get me unscared of the pasture riding. Then I will take on the new challenge of the new horse (Third Time). Oh, what I would give for some dry weather and a nice trail ride. :)

You Know You're A Horse Person When...

* Your 5 year old son picks up your snaffle bit and asks if he can use your hand cuffs.

* You insist to your SO during a game of Scrabble that "oxer" is, too, a word, even if it ISN'T in the dictionary, and spend a good half-hour poring over horse books to find it in writing.

* You're at the post office looking at the Santa and his Reindeer cutouts on the wall, and you make a mental note that all the reindeer are hanging their knees and they better get better form if they're going to continue this jumping thing!

* You take someone's temperature and think 102°F is normal.

* If you find yourself drumming horse gaits with your fingers.

* If you will memorize a complete dressage test, but can't remember three important names for your history test.

* The real estate agent asks what kind of house you are looking for and you say "More than six acres".

* You find yourself analyzing leg and foot conformation on your friends, and thinking how corrective shoeing could improve their way of going.

* You can be too sick to go to school but you're never too sick to go riding.

* You can't for the life of you remember the word "heel". That thing on the bottom of your leg that joins it to your foot is called a "hock".

* You get out of bed at 4 am to get ready for a show but can't wake up in time for school.

* You realize that finding a horse shoe truly is lucky because you've saved ten bucks.

* You accept My Space friends instantly if they have a picture of a horse in their profile.

* You see a girl wearing a pair of high-heeled, pointy-toed fashionable boots and when she tells you how much they cost you say,"Wow, you could have bought a nice pair of REAL boots for that!"

* You end up driving your friends everywhere because your big truck can fit them all.

* You've had to explain to said friends what some of the objects in your truck are; "That's a hoofpick..." "Umm, those leather strips are reins..."

* You've answered your cell phone while riding before and had to tell someone, "Hold on a second, my horse is being a brat".

* You can't understand why people can talk about cars for hours, but someone asks about your horse and you can't shut up

* You frequently have to explain things to your non-horsey friends; "No, a pony is NOT a baby horse"; "A farrier has nothing to do with
faeries";"When I said I was training a stud, I meant a horse, stupid!"

* Your friend comes over to watch the Olympics and wants to watch swimming, and you say,"No! David O'Conner just took the oxer and is on his way to the triple combination! " and your friend looks at you like you are crazy.

* None of your friends bother to ask you to the mall on the weekends because you know you'll say, "Are you crazy?! I'm going riding."

* You cluck to your friends, dogs, pets, car, ect. to make them go faster.

* In the kitchen, instead of saying "excuse me" you poke you spouse in the ribs and say "over"

* Your spouse can track dirt into the house all they want, but God help them if they muddy up the tack room.

* you explain to your child's pediatrician that you knew the child was sick because he was off his feed.

* you stop channel surfing at Budweiser Clydesdale commercials.

* You're laughing right now because you know these are true!

There is a certain point in time when a person becomes dissatisfied with his or her life. He or she might be thinking that there is something more for him or her out there. It could be about the job, about love, about financial disposition or about life in general. If you feel this way then you may be in need of a life coach.

Life Coach and Life Coaching

A life coach is the same as a baseball coach, a basketball coach or a football coach. The coaches teach and train the players to change faulty habits, develop and improve so that they may become better players. A life coach is similar to them. He or she coaches people to change faulty habits, develop and improve the different aspects of their lives for them to determine and achieve their goals in life.

Life coaching is the process of developing and improving a person’s life. It is a partnership between a client and a coach for a certain period of time. The partners will have sessions that will focus on the client’s needs and other issues.

Through these sessions, the life coach will help the client develop different strategies and solutions to improve. This is an interaction between two persons and it is not only the life coach who will be making the decisions. The client will be actively involved especially in the decision making process.

1995 CM 3 Horse Bumper Pull Trailer - For Sale

1995 CM 3 horse bumper pull trailer for sale. You can see the pictures at the site above. $5000.

The trailer is big enough for three TB's. The gross weight without horses is 8112 pounds (according to the title). It has on board 12V power. The dressing room is roomy, just not quite big enough for sleeping. Unless you are a kid. :) Three kids have slept in it quite comfortably. It has a great tack room in the back that holds three saddles, a blanket bar, hooks for bridles and tack, and even a tack box on the door. It has drop down windows on the heads and bus windows on the butts. Great tires. Nice trailer brakes. The onboard battery has a solar charger.

I have not been able to find a trailer exactly like this on the internet. All the ones I found were stock on the butt side with no tack room in the back. And ones not quite this nice were going for this much. It's a sturdy trailer with lots of miles left to go.

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!

It takes less than a minute.

Work this out as you read. Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out! This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun. OK, so it may be a waste of time, but what else do you do on a rainy Sat. morning?

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to ride your horse. (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1758... If you haven't, add 1757.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number.

The first digit of this was your original number.

(i.e., How many times you want to ride in a week.)

The next two numbers are... YOUR AGE ! ------ (Oh YES, it is!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2008.) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS!

Come on! It's a 5K! That is 3.1 miles! I know all of us horse folks can at least walk that far. We have had to walk that far to catch our freaking horse in the pastures on some days. :) So come on! let's walk for a great cause!

I am going to begin to train and inlist some of my coworkers who are working to the Tulsa Run. :)

We could even set up a team and raise more money for the cure! And bring publicity to our rides!

NEW OFFICE POLICY

Dress Code:

1) You are advised to come to work dressed according to your salary.

2) If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a Gucci bag, we will assume you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a raise.

3) If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes, and therefore you do not need a raise.

4) If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise.

Sick Days:

We will no longer accept a doctor's statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work

Personal Days:

Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturdays & Sundays.

Bereavement Leave:

This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend the funeral arrangements in your place. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early.

Bathroom Breaks:

* Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure.

* Chubby people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's all the time needed to drink a Slim-Fast.

Chinchillas!

This exotic animal was named after the Chincha people of the Andes region. The Andes Mountains in South America. Chinchilla actually means "little Chincha". Back around the close of the 19th century, the animals were known for their thick and soft fur.

There are two types of chinchillas. The chinchilla brevicaudata, which is also known as the Bolivian, Peruvian and Royal chinchilla, has a short tail. They came from the Andes Mountains in the regions of Chile, Peru and Bolivia. This chinchilla was on the verge of becoming extinct and were known for the exquisite fur. Even with the fur, the population of these animals continued to decrease. The chinchilla lanigera, which is also known as the Chilean, Coastal or Lesser chinchilla, has a long tail.

This species of chinchilla can be found in Chile. Even though the word "lanigera" means "having a woolen coat", they are covered with hair instead. The hair is soft, sleek and sticks to their skin. There are three types of chinchilla lanigera: The LaPlata are muscular, round and have a short head. The Costina has longer hind legs, slight hump and a pointed nose. The Raton is similar to the LaPlata in they way it's structured. It has a pointed nose and they are of a smaller size.

Burrows or cracks in rocks are where chinchillas reside. They can jump very well and at least up to 5 feet high. When residing in the wild, chinchillas consume fruits, seeds, plants and small insects. As far as breeding is concerned, that can take place at any time of the year. When the female chinchillas do procreate, their average length of pregnancy is 111 days. For a chinchilla, that's a long period of time compared to other animals in that group. Because their pregnancies are so long, their offspring are born with their eyes open and their body full of fur. At the time of delivery, their litter is usually one or two, with the two more times than not are twins.

The first try of breeding started in 1895. In that same year, the first animal was born and each year two litters were born. In the summer of 1896, an unknown disease halted the breeding process. By then, there were 13 animals and all of them succumbed within two months time. Around 1918, there was a resurgence of chinchillas. A man from California was interested in trapping chinchillas so he could raise them as pets.

At first, the Chilean government refused, but as the man kept asking, the government relented. During three year period, only eleven chinchillas were captured. They were brought back and bred in the United States. This process started the first chinchilla farm. This also started the process of the domestic chinchilla.

The interest in chinchilla fur started in the 16th century as international trade. Chinchilla fur is prevalent because it has a soft texture. Because of even color across the board, people like to use it for lining large pieces of clothing or small pieces of clothing.

The fur can also be used to create an entire large piece of clothing. So many chinchillas must be destroyed in order to make a coat because their skin is so small. Because of this, one of the species became non-existent and supply for the other became scarce. People still hunt and kill domestic chinchillas to create clothing, but wild chinchillas are no longer targeted for hunting.

Dear Horse Owners,

How to save money on mowing

Rick posted this to the RetrainTB's Yahoo Group and got a lot of comments. I guess we were not the first to think of this. :)

I have about a half acre to mow and now that gas is 4.00, that gets expensive too, so here is the plan that cuts mowing from once a week to once a month, (saving about 6 gals or 24.00, not to mention Tires, oil ,blades, and misc. wear and tear on riding lawnmower. That will buy rice, or beans or ramen for two weeks.

1. Close gate to yard.
2. Open gate from pasture.
3. Ask a group of horses to come into yard and chase out the ones who are fighting with each other (next time pick a smaller group).
4. Explain that they need to help "earn their keep" by mowing and fertilizing the yard (most will do this willingly once they understand the need).
5. Appologise profusely to wife for fruit tree damage.
6. Hurriedly erase horse tracks from flowerbeds and front porch.
7. Remind wife "you are saving money".
8. Straighten chain link fence.
9. Get horse out of garage because child left garage door open.
10. Remove the "present" left by horse on welcome mat.

There you are done with mowing for another week.

Rick left out the good part. The fruit tree was apple. :P So they just ate thier treats. :) More like used it for a scratching stick. (Note to self: Buy a bigger apple tree next year!) The peach tree survived. :)

And the best if our one ex racer who thinks the tops and nice yellow blooms on the tomato plants were planted just for him. I put up a electric fence this year after the strawberries got eaten. :P Flag also thinks the above ground pool is his special water bucket. He likes that it is just the right height and he doesn't have to bend to drink. Course the really bad part is he washes out all that wonderful mowing substance and the kids get a pool with green floaties. :P

Anne got the one that likes the front porch so much. That silly appy has no fear. Walked right up to a running wood chipper, sniffed it, waltzed through the flowerbed wondering why we were putting mulch on it and then walked right up on the porch like a danged dog. Luckily it is concrete. :)

Son of Mariah was weeding my flowerbeds last weekend. He took special effort to leave the zinnas. I guess they didn't taste good. :) I gave up trying to grow sunflowers. I guess that what I get for putting them in their feed.
